If you’re not the kind of person who likes to lounge on a beautiful beach with a delicious fruity cocktail in one hand and a book in the other, then this might not be the perfect article for you. On the other hand, if you are the kind of person who often finds themselves considering the benefits of a quick drink of something alcoholic before you board a plane to your chosen destination, then keep reading.

In this article, we’re going to explore the reasons why you should avoid drinking before your next flight, and save your vacation drinking for the beaches. While drinking to calm your nerves can seem like a good idea, the truth is that it’s just going to put you in an even worse position. No-one likes hurtling through the air while their stomach is heaving and their head is spinning, after all.

Reason 1: You Might Feel More Intoxicated

The air that’s around you at 36,000 feet is not breathable, which is why the airplane you’ll be travelling in is pressurized. However, the cabin has much less oxygen than you’d naturally be exposed to on the ground. This means that the alcohol you drink may be metabolized faster, making you feel worse than usual.

While this might not seem like a bad thing for the more party-loving readers amongst you, getting wasted on an airplane isn’t much of a good idea. After all, you might have a car rental to worry about when you land in your chosen destination, and you could even make such a bad impression on the other end of the baggage claim that you end up getting arrested! Keep your mind focused on your neck purse, wallet belt, and the vacation ahead of you.

Reason 2: You Might Not Be Able to Board Connecting Flights

Since the light beers and mixed drinks you chugged for your flight might have hit you a little harder than usual, you’re going to have to hope that walking through the airport and approaching your connecting flight is enough time to clear your head. Remember that many gate agents will be required by law to prevent you from boarding a plane if you appear to be intoxicated, neck purse or wallet belt swinging from your person.

Reason 3: Motion Sickness Might be Much Worse

Pressurized oxygen, turbulence, nerves, and alcohol all come together to make a pretty dangerous mix. The chances are that even having a couple of drinks before your flight will be enough to enhance your motion sickness significantly, which means more vomiting on your waist belt, searching for tissues in your neck purse, or running to those tiny airplane bathrooms.

Reason 4: You’ll Make No Friends

Finally, while having a few drinks on the beach while you’re on vacation could be a great way to meet new people and get social, you’re not going to make any friends if you’re drunk on your flight. Just as your friends don’t like listening to your loud and slurred rants about the things that bother you when they’re sober and you’re not – strangers won’t appreciate the interactions either.
