Now that airports are busier than ever, and airline staffing reductions have begun to create longer lines at the check-in and security points of your terminal, the wait times between getting to your airport, and actually boarding your flight can be a little unpredictable.

If you’re heading on a long-haul flight, then you’re going to want a few extra minutes to buy a magazine, grab a snack, or simply visit the bathroom before you’re ushered onto the plane. Fortunately, our list of ways to get through the airport faster should be able to save you a couple of moments here and there that will all add up in your favor.

1.    Check the Flight Status Before You Leave Home

First of all, before you get the kids in the car and set off for the airport, it makes sense to check the status of your flight. Although most of the time your flight won’t simply be cancelled on you without any warning at all, it makes sense to double check that you’re heading out at the right time. The last thing you want is to rush out at the crack of dawn just to discover you’re being move to a flight several hours later.

2.    Gear Up

When it comes to ways to get through the airport faster, one of the best things you can do is invest in the right stuff. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to buy all of the latest technology or the most impressive suitcases on the market, but it does mean thinking carefully about the gear you have, and how it can be improved. For instance, slip on shoes and a TSA-approved padlock will help you get through security faster, while personalized luggage will help you spot your bags when you arrive at your destination.

3.    Know the Airport

If you’ve never been to this particular airport before, one of the best ways to get through the airport faster is to learn your route ahead of time. Look up maps online and find out the best place you can park when you arrive, as well as where you’ll need to go all the way from the front door, to your departure lounge. You can even track down places where you’ll be able to stock up on snacks and drinks along the way too.

4.    Have your Documents Ready

Before you even bother joining the line for check-in, dig out all of the documents that you need and make sure you have them ready to hand over. Having all of this stuff on hand, such as your passport, boarding pass, and ID, will help to keep everyone happy, while also allowing you to move through the process as efficiently as possible.

5.    Weigh Your Bags

If you’re concerned that your bag might be overweight, weigh it before you leave for the airport, or simply get rid of a few unnecessary items. The last thing you want is to be caught up at the check-desk simply because you’re a couple of pounds too heavy with your luggage.
